Linux SLIP Setup

To start the connection, you will need dip-3.3.7i.uri.tgz or dip-3.3.7.j.tgz or dip-3.3.7.k.uri.tgz or later versions of dip.

Setting up /etc/hosts

Create the file /etc/hosts with the following entries:

192.0.2.1 myhostname.nus.sg myhostname
137.132.12.101 sunsite sunsite.nus.sg
137.132.5.2 nuscc nuscc.nus.sg
137.132.12.100 ftp.nus.sg

Setting up /etc/resolv.conf

Create the file /etc/resolv with the following entries:

domain nus.sg
nameserver 137.132.5.2

Getting a dip script

Get this dip script. Edit your hostname and modem speed in the script and save it in a file such as dip.script.

Starting SLIP

To start your SLIP connection, run:

    dip -v dip.script

When you are connected, dip will drop you into an interactive login session. Enter your userid and password, ending each with a ^J (not ENTER). Then type ^] to get out of interactive mode and you're ready.
