PPPoE ADSL Setup Guide by Joey. Most DSL Internet Service Providers require you to install software to be able to connect to them. They generally call it their "Access Manager" or "Connection Manager" and 99% of the time they do not have a version for Linux. Have no fear though, you can download the Roaring Penguin PPPoE client from http://www.roaringpenguin.com/pppoe/#download
Setting up rp-pppoe is fairly simple. In this guide we will be
installing the rp-pppoe source. Once you've downloaded it from
http://www.roaringpenguin.com/pppoe/#download move the file to
/usr/local/src and untar it by running the following command: There will be a check on your system to ensure you meet all the requirements and if so it will compile and install everything for you. Once it has finished compiling everything and copying the files to the /usr/local directories it will prompt you for your DSL account information and some firewall/configuration information. After you are done, accept the settings and type adsl-start to bring up the connection. If all goes well you should see a few dots and "Connected!" If the connection fails you'll want to open up the /var/log/messages file with a text editor and have a look at the error messages. You can try searching http://www.google.com with the errors to see if someone has had a similar problem. If you're connected but you can't seem to load any web pages etc, open up your /etc/resolv.conf file with your favorite text editor and make sure you have your ISP's name servers properly listed.
There's also an RPM version of the rp-pppoe software available. You can
download the RPM from
http://www.roaringpenguin.com/pppoe/#download. To install it run the
following command as root: Having trouble? Got questions? Require further assistance? If so please feel free to visit our Help Forums and ask the experts! |
