Setting up a PPP account can be very frustrating. It is even harder when your ISP is lacking good answers to your problem. Until about a month ago I was a frustrated AT&T customer. I was bouncing around the net, Scanning the WURD newsgroups, looking for anything I could find. Then one day, it worked! out of the blue. So i backed up all of the information i could find onto a disk, and have gotten it to work every time. This howto will show you how to access the internet with AT&T

In order to use these directions properly, print out this page, and save both resolv.conf - http://members.xoom.com/MAjiK_MAn/att/resolv.conf
chap-secrets - http://members.xoom.com/MAjiK_MAn/att/chap-secrets
to a diskette so you can use them later.....

The following Section is directions to connect. please follow them, if there are any problems, contact me.

1. In a terminal, type netcfg. This will open the network configurator.

2. Fill in the information according to the sections. * means leave it blank

3. Ok, now you need to open up a shell, so we can edit some files. It is vital that you copy and paste these files, because if you were to type them, there would be missing characters to please copy and paste or get the files.

A1. Mount your floppy drive.
Try mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy first and if that doesn't work
Try mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

A. Copy "resolv.conf" from the disk to "/etc/resolv.conf"
cp /mnt/floppy/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf

B. Copy "chap-secrets" from the disk to "/etc/ppp/chap-secrets"
cp /mnt/floppy/chap-secrets /etc/ppp/chap-secrets

C. Edit "/etc/ppp/chap-secrets" so it will fit your info. Remember not to change any parts of the file, except the userid and the password. Edit the file by typing:

pico /etc/ppp/chap-secrets

You should get a screen that looks like this. Replace 999999999 with your AT&T UserID, and xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx with your password. Don't change anything else.

# PAP/CHAP authentication file.
# This file should have a permission of 600.
# chmod 600 /etc/ppp/pap-secrets
# Username   Server   Password   IP addresses
"999999999@worldnet.att.net"  *  "xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx"   *
*  "999999999@worldnet.att.net"  "xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx"  *

When you are done editing, hit CTRL+X and save it as "/etc/ppp/chap-secrets" then hit enter.

D. Unmount your floppy drive by typing:

umount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

4. From here on out, you should be set. To activate your dialup, open a shell and type "netcfg". Goto the [Interfaces] section, select ppp0, and then click activate. If you did everything right..... you should hear the modem dialing and connecting. All you have to do is fire up netscape and visit a web page. Congratulations!

5. It is important that you backup "/etc/resolv.conf" and "/etc/ppp/chap-secrets" to a floppy. It also wouldn't hurt to keep a copy of you account information printed and on the disk.
