k..... complete newb here. This is my first day using Linux and I am completely frustrated so please bare with me. I am desperately trying to do a SIMPLE network set up for my home where my laptops, tv etc connect to my Linux based file server/pc. I have read a couple of resources on the topic, installed samba and followed the instructions and have had no luck. I decided to try and find different instructions and try those... I now find my SMB.CONF file is blank. I have tried deleting samba and re downloading a new copy but again, same problem. I guess my question is two foaled; i need to fix samba and secondly configure a windows/linux home network for file share purposes. thank-you!
note: managed to find a back up copy of the smb.conf file so one problem down. Any help on the networking issue would be greatly appreciated! Thank-you.

What linux distribution/version are you running?
What windows version are you running?
Make sure the workgroup name is the same on all computers. Connecting to windows from linux is easy if you are running gnome or kde since the file browsers have built in browsing support.
On the linux side create a smb password for each use via the smbpasswd command.

windows xp pro and I believe the linux version is 10.10 (that's what it said on the screen when I loaded it anyway). I just downloaded it this week so pretty sure it's current. I can't even get SAMBA to work properly let alone get to the windows side of it yet. I did try the network map from windows side which obviously didn't work so i went back to the linux side and discovered samba wasn't functioning properly. i tried several fixes to no avail and the tried removing the file and downloading again. I found that the config file was the same despite removing and reinstaling AND now i keep getting a bad comand error on the restart comand line. no idea what the issue is? according to the reading I've done this is supposed to simple but i have had nothing but DAYS of issues. you're input is again GREATLY appreciated.
Ok, looks like you are running Ubuntu. You can google for ubuntu and samba ,should find lots of help. It is easier if the user name is the same on both linux and windows. Create a smb user like
sudo smbpasswd -a your_user_name (replace with actual name)
To start samba:
sudo /etc/init.d/smb start
Make sure if running a firewall on either computer that it allows incoming SMB traffic. I would configure the XP box for netbios over TCP/IP.
