Full Version: Installing Linux Ubuntu

I am trying to install Ubuntu on a new dual core Toshiba L300 lap top that has no other OS installed. I am using a disc provided with my Learning About Ubuntu book. The ubuntu Version is 8.04. The installation process has completed using the text installation option. After receving a message that the installation was complete and the system needed to reboot, the rebooting process has stalled with the following showing on screen:

udevd-event [1506]: run-program: '/sbin/modprobe' abnormal exit

BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-5ubuntu12) Built-in shell (ash)
Ener 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

This disc installed perfectly well (using the text install option) on my son's desktop and a previous laptop I had (but the keybord was faulty - nothing to do with linux Ubuntu - hence the new one). Now the disc will not install on the new Lap top. I should say that the computer did have Vista on it when I purchased it, but this was removed.

Can someone help with where I go from here please? My book doesn't seem to have the answer to this one!!

Wow! That's an amazingly quick response. Many thanks. I have disabled the LAN in Bios to get Ubuntu running, but am not sure how I can download the latest version of 8.04.1 if I cannot find my wireless connection. Do I not need to re-enable the LAN to do this? If I do then Ubunutu won't run.
