Full Version: NAS/Landisk through Proxy

Hello,

Firstly I have to say that I am (sadly) not familiar with Linux at all. However i do have 20+ years experience with Computers, specifically in the Windows environment.

Our corporate Internet Cafe have got 10 WinXP boxes connected to a Switch/Hub which in return is connected to the Squid Proxy box, which ofcourse is connected to a Cisco ADSL Router.

Through my XP machine I have "root" user access and can change the various configurations of the proxy via a HTML interface.

Now here's the Issue I have :

I have this (no-name-brand) Landisk simply known as "Mobile Landisk" by Chronos.

I have successfully configured the device in it's build-in Configuration console; such as giving it a STATIC IP, and changed it's workgroup to WORKGROUP (for windows xp). As well as the necessary SHARES, etc.

Please note: I configured the Landisk by attaching it via Lan cable directly to a stand-alone XP machine, and accessed it through it's default IP address. From there I could change all the configs to my liking.


The internal IP Address for our Proxy box is 192.168.0.2 >>> PORT 3128. I believe this is the default Squid configuration(?)

The 10 XP boxes' IP's are 192.168.0.3, 192.168.0.4, etc.

So I have configured the Landisk with IP 192.168.0.13. Then connected the Landisk with it's LAN cable to an open port on the SWITCH.

THE PROBLEM is that In "My Network Places" on XP, I can see all of the 10 XP boxes , BUT NOT THE LANDISK.

I cannot connect to the Landisk in any way whatsoever. Ping returns 100% loss.
I have also tried several Network Scanning softwares. Nothing. The IP 192.168.0.13(landisk) is reported as DEAD.

I've been battling with this for weeks now. PLEASE! can someone point me in the right direction.

I am (almost) sure the "problem" is with the PROXY configuration, but i am unsure of what to look out for in the proxy config.

Please help.

Are you using XP Home or XP Pro?

When the landisk is connected to the switch do you see the link lights illuminated on the switch and the unit itself?
When directly connected to the laptop you need a crossover cable. When connected to the switch you need a straight cable.
Many of the newer ethernet adapters are able to autodetect crossover vs straight.

The netmask setting of the landisk must match the netmask setting of your network.

Are you using DHCP or static IP addresses on your network?

I do not use squid but check the logs to see if anything pops up for the landisk.
