Full Version: Need help backing up files
Linuxhelp > Support > Technical Support
If my question seems stupid and n00bish I'm sorry, I'm also sorry for not searching the forums for an answer before posting, but I can't find anything that has helped yet.

I was running XP when my OS crashed... sob sob sob, my data is still there, I need it back.

I found Knoppix 5.1.1 and can see all of my files! Hurray! The problem is, I can't seem to figure out how to get these files to my usb drive, I did the copy/paste thing but it's saying it can't write to the disc... Something with root privileges, I don't know, I'm totally new to linux and honestly haven't the slightest clue what I'm doing.

Long story short, I'm trying to copy the entire contents of "hda1" to "sda1" and it's not letting me.

Thank you much in advance.
Many distributions mount FAT32 and NTFS drives read only.
You can manually mount the drive using the command

sudo mount -t vfat -o umask=0 /dev/sda1 /media/usb

Change vfat to ntfs as required.
