Well i've searched on the net and read through various threads etc about people who have had the same problem, basically i have installed Ubuntu Linux on a 160 GB portable hard drive, and when i go to boot the computer without the portable hard drive connected it comes up with GRUB 1.5 loading....error 21 etc.

Basically i want to have windows (currently installed on the internal hard disks) to boot and run when the portable hard drive isn't connected, and when it is, for Linux to boot, or for an option to be given.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can install grub to the external hard drive via the command
grub-install /dev/sdx where x is the drive letter i.e. a-z of your USB drive.

You can use fixmbr via XPs recover console to restore its bootloader. Change the BIOS to boot from USB first.
