I have an old Sony vaio 505fx (P1, running win 98)

I'd like to turn it into an email/web client - clear everything off, load some kind of linux and get a cheap WiFi card.

I'd only use it to surf the web, check my gmail, goof off on youtube etc.

Can it be done? Is it worth the effort? Will linux even run on a P1?

answer here or off-list at npkeith at gmail dot com

Yes linux will run on a P1. What distribution really depends on how much memory is installed in the PC. The big distributions require at least 128MB- 256MB as a min
Check out deli linux, damn small linux (DSL) and if you really want to get your feet dirty try slackware. A light windows manager like fluxbox will do well.

BTW besides the security issues of posting a personal email address on a public forum it is in bad taste to ask for a private answer. Being a public forum the answers you receive help all who might have the same or similar question.

Thanks for the info. not really much of a geek, so when I get to point of installation, I'll probably need some hand-holding.

Thanks for that too. I used my gmail account - great spamshield, gobs of memory allocation, and easy to manage. It is not my *personal* email, just the one I use if I might get spammed. I did write out the address in a meager attempt to stop spambots from stripping the address. As for the private answer thing - you'll notice I said here or off list. I have been flamed in the past (on other lists, about other interests) for posting "stupid questions," so I thought it prudent to give people the option. I will not do so again (at least on this list... ;-) )

No worries, Just remember the old saying that there are no such thing as a stupid question. Of course the seemingly easy questions have
probably been answered many times and can be found by searching google or one of the many linux forums.
