What the meaning of sda , dev, etc. ?

dev is an abbreviation for devices which are found in the /dev directory. sda is a SCSI hard drive device. The a is the first drive. sdb is the second and so on. However, it depends on the kernel version you are running. With the latest all hard drives now including PATA use the SCSI subsystem and have a device ID of sdx.
