After a clean install of 7.3, 8.0 or 9.0 on my system, I get a black screen with what looks like an X-windows X cursor. This occurs when the login screen should appear. Everything on the hardware side of the system is fine. Any ideas where to look?

Check your /var/log/XFree86.0.log and look for any noticable errors or warnings, denoted with (EE) or (WW) at the begining of the line. Try killing your xdm or kdm or gdm (your graphical login manager) and try startx from console to see fi you can start the XServer manually.

I looked at the log and the problem was the video card was not supporting the default resolution set at installation. I have installed a newer video card and everything is booting fine.
