I installed almost all linux versions on my server pc at home.

Its a Pentuim 3 Compaq PC

Compaq Bios (2000)

After i installed a linux it works good.
But after 2/3 reboots i get a error like this

VFS: Cannot open root device "VolGroup00/LogVol00" or unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel Panic - Not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs unknown-block(0,0)

Can somebody help me fix this?

thx smile.gif
Why are you using LVM partitions?

Have you upgraded your kernel, and then rebooted? Have you created an initrd for yourself?

Please post your menu.lst (grub config).

Why are you using LVM partitions?

Have you upgraded your kernel, and then rebooted? Have you created an initrd for yourself?

Please post your menu.lst (grub config).

I just started with linux, i currently run CentOS.
At installation i choose for default install layout.

This is my Grub Config:

# grub.conf generated by anaconda
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file
# NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that
# All kernel and initrd patsh are relative to /boot/, eg.
# root (hd0,0)
# Kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00
# initrd /initrd-version.img
title CentOS (2.6.9-34.0.1.EL)
       root (hd0,0)
       kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9-34.0.1.EL ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00
       initrd /initrd-2.6.9-34.0.1.EL.img
title CentOS i386 (2.6.9-34.EL)
       root (hd0,0)
       kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9-34.0.1.EL ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00
       initrd /initrd-2.6.9-34.0.1.EL.img
Did you change anthing i.e. installed applications prior to this error?
Look at the output of the console command dmesg. If you see lots of access errors then maybe the drive is going bad.
Result of Dmesg

thx biggrin.gif

Just open /boot/grub/grub.conf (That's a pretty normal location, but might vary) using your nomral text editor and change the lines. Save the file, and reboot You proabbly have a program caled "vi" installed. Vi is a text editor, but it can take a bit of getting used to. To start typing text, press "i" first. (You alos need to do it before using backsapce, but not the "delete" key). To save the file, press "esc" to get out of editing mode and then type ":wq" to write the file and quit
