okay so I use ubuntu and windows XP 64, I had a problem with windows and decided to install it again forgetting that it would over rigth the MBR now I'm locked out of linux and nothing I have tired has worked. I tried booting the live cd and then mounting my root /dev/hda2 to /media/root and that worked but then I chroot /media/root /bin/bash and tried to reinstall grub that way and the result was nothing so now I have to ideas on how to get back in to linux if someone could help that would be great

Don't ubuntu CDs havea "restore bootloader" option? (It wouldnt surprise me if they didnt)

You could just perform an "upgrade" install - whcih shouldnt touch any pakcges (since they will be the "most recent" version) but should restore your MBR.

get this one

burn it to a disc, boot with it, and using menus you can repair grub, and allow windows as well.
