First of all, i'd like to make a confession - i'm a newbie when it comes to linux. (got that off my chest)

I'm keen to have a play around with it before it gets installed for real so have decided to install it to my 2GB pen drive. Somebody has reccomended me Feather linux as its installation space is tiny - however since i have 2gb's of space to play with i was wondering which other flavours of linux i could fit on my little drive ?

The thing is - i'd prefer it if it supported installing to bootable usb in the installation, as like i say - im not so hot with linux.

Playing with one lLinux distribution, especailly a "lightweight" one, will not necessarily give you an idea of how others work. Since lightweight-dstors tend to cut out non-essential tools, they are also rather a steep (read:: sheer drop) learning curve for newbies.

You would be better off using a liveCD like ubuntu which is a) easy to use (since you dont need to go through an "installation") and impossible to mess up, since the settings are erased when you reboot (not saved onto the CD).

Having said that, 2GB isnt tiny, and you could probably fit a modest Mandriva or Fedora installation onto it (provided that you can get the pen drive recognised during installation).

I would not recommend installing a regular distribution to a pen drive. Even though it is on the order of like 100,000,000+ times, flash memory does have a limited number of write/erase cycles. You need something like a liveCDs where temp files are written to RAM.

Not only that, but even a USB 2.0 device (which I'm sure this is), is VERY slow compared to a hard drive. It wouldn't be unusuable, but it would suck.

I know that damnsmalllinux.org has a section of their forum dedicated to helping people install DamnSmallLinux onto a USB flash drive (hell, I did it with a 64mb flash drive).
