I am using fedora 4, and I am having no luck getting my cable modem or dial up to work. On boot up, it recognizes the ethernet connection, and under the device control says that is active, but I am getting nothing. I also configured a dial up modem connection, but i recieved an error 8 message when attempting to activate it.

Help please!
Pardon me if i am wrong, but i don't think cable modems need dial up connection.

All you have to get is , correct IP address , gateway , DNS server list from your ISP.
After that you can configure your cable modem very easily.

Just go to System-Settings->Internet Configuration Wizard.

And there select the tab , Ethernet Card and enter the configuration you got from your ISP.
