Linuxhelp > Support > Technical Support
Hello. I'm shig. A Japanese University student.

I tried to compile linux kernel for the first time. I successed to build the new kernel. I installed the lilo boot loader and restarted the sysytem. Then the trouble happened.
(I tried the grub boot loader but the result was same.)

(Power ON)
(I chose the new kernel)

BIOS data check successful

I did commands listed below during the compiling...
#cd /usr/src/linux-2.4.31
#make menuconfig
#make dep
#make clean
#make bzImage
#make install
#make modules
#make modules_install
#mkinitrd /boot/linux-2.4.31.img 2.4.3

I successed to carry out these commands.

I can boot up the older kernel but I cannot the new one. What should I do?

CPU:Pentium MMX 266MHz

Distribution:Vine 3.1
(The Vine linux is based on the RedHat linux. It contains Japanese local packages.)

Kernel(old):2.4.27 (rpm package)
Kernel(new):2.4.31 (The Linux Kernel Archives)

When you say software reset, what exactly do you mean? Does the system just reboot (ie show the BIOS/POST screen)?

I made mistake. The system just REBOOT.

I tried to road the kernel compiled on VAIO on another PC. I successed to road.

There is something wrong with my VAIO. Below is the component of VAIO.

Give me advice, please!

Model: Sony VAIO PCG-C1R
OS:Vine 3.1, gcc3.3.2
