depending on what boot loader you are using
and what version of linux you are running you
can reset it.....
please post
bootloader you are using
and what version of linux you are using....
for example
lilo with redhat 8.0

ya you can boot to single mode
at the linux boot prompt: linux single
then it will dump to a bash prompt as user root
to where you can type passwd
and it will ask you for a new password....
but i think if the person is using redhat 8.0 i think
it still asks you for a passwd to get to the prompt
im not sure though because i have never forgotten
