If you have the install CDs boot the 1st disk up and select rescue mode. Your root partition will be mounted at /mnt/sysimage. Then type in following commands.

chroot /mnt/sysimage
grub-install

You will need to add a section to boot windows like:
title Windows
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1

Change (hd0,0) to match where XP is installed.

Yeah, the bottom line is that you need a bootdisk. Unfortunatly, Windows overwrites the MBR, and as far as i know, there is no way around this.

There is an alternate way of re-installing grub if you don't have a bootdisk. It requires downloading a live cd (I like to suggest Gentoo LiveCD due to the small download size). If you require instructions how how to do this, let me know.
