Full Version: Moving Mysql Data Directory
Linuxhelp > Support > Technical Support

I've just installed RedHat Enterprise Linux v4 with the mysql client and server rpm packages. I'm trying to put my mysql data directory on my /home partition, my largest partition. At the moment mysql is reading the database information from /var/lib/mysql. In the past what I would do is create a symbolic link from /var/lib/mysql to a mysql directory on my /home partition and that worked fine. But with this version of mysql it doesn't work. When I run /etc/init.d/mysql start, it fails. If I change the symbolic link back to a real directory, it works just fine. Does anyone know a way that I can use a symbolic link for the mysql database directory? Thanks.

mysql --version
mysql Ver 14.7 Distrib 4.1.7, for redhat-linux-gnu (i386)
using MY SQL admin you can change the directory to the path, or SQLCC
