Novell,Bangalore(India) is working on a Desktop searching tool called beagle .

One of their developers Varadhan gave a presentaion about this software at Hacker Crackdown. Its really cutting edge stuff.
Hm, I've heard of one like that as well.

It's updatedb && locate

And it can't cause serious security problems by giving the content of things it shouldn't.

UpdateDB and locate are different.

Beagle is more advanced than that.Here you have a per user daemon,that not only searches for a file,but it also searches for the contents in the file.

Right now using BEST,you can search .pdf,.doc,.sxi,......(sorry the list goes on)

It even have a kernel patch called inotify,which triggers a interrrupt whenever a inode is created.Now this beagle daemon handles that and saves the appropriate information pertaining to the file.

I have seen the results...and i can say that locate and beagle simply don't compare.
