Sounds like a problem with xorg.conf/XF86Config

Please make sure the following lines are replaced/added in your X config file:

Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

Im sorree . im a relative newbie in the linux world and am not sure of where to access the xf86config files..
Termina
/etc/X11/XF86Config
or
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
or
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4

Then find the Input/Mouse section and add/replace the lines from my first post.

Section "InputDevice"

Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection
