Hello everyone,
I am a linux newbie, I have installed apache, mysql, and php directly off of the redhat 8 CD awhile back. however, i wish to uninstall those versions, and install the latest (secure) everything. I am not sure I know exactly how to do this.. I have downloaded the latest files for php, mysql, and apache. Can anyone help me step by step on exactly what I need to do to basically 'upgrade' the old software that came installed from the CD? Any help greatly appreciated.

Did you download RPM files or tar.gz files?

To remove the RPM ones you would run rpm -e package (ie rpm -e httpd; rpm -e php). You can get a list of installed packages by running rpm -qa |more

Once you hvae unsinstalled the old versions, web monkey have a good tuotrial on compiling Apache and PHP on Linux (http://webmonkey.wired.com/webmonkey/00/44/index4a.html)

I Downloaded the tar.gz files, The PHP for Redhat 8 hasn't been ported to RPM yet as far as I can tell. I Tried upgrading the Apache via the RPM Yesterday, but it requires updated OpenSSL (which I haven't tried yet). Another reason I think I want to fully upgrade everything is because some of my PHP stuff does not work (it just shows up as a bunch of code) but some code works. I guess that is from using an oldver..

There's just too many security holes in my system now, lol.. I appreciate both of you responding! Happy New Year! smile.gif

If code shows up, then it's because your server sint setup correctly, ie it isnt sending the code to be parsed via PHP. Keep in mind that you can only parse one kind of code at a time, so perl OR php OR SSI not a combination. However, newer versions of PHP do support some different functions, and you might also want to install PHP5 alongside PHP4 On my test server, i have it setup to parse *.php5 via the PHP5 module, and *.php, *.phtml etc. via PHP4 - which is quite handy for checking it works OK.

Well done - It isn't as hard as some people make out is it?

Actually, it isnt if you ahve all the depedencies - PHP GTK is being un-co-operative and may soon find itself well and truly compiled on a different workstation
