Linuxhelp > In The Community > General Discussion
Hi guys...

I am new to Linux and facing some problems in configuration.
1. I wana configure Linux in such a way that as the xwindows starts up there should be no login prompt to be displayed. and right away a browser should be open with any speciific website (e.g.

2. then the user don't hv access to close the browser or change the address of website or perform any other task.
he/she should be limited into web browser.

please tell me how to do it.
thanks in advance.
GDM or KDM can be configured to auto-login a user, but i dunno how you would do the other bit. You might need a custom browser.

I just didthis today...

open up a file called inittab (in console: vi /etc/inittab) otherwise from xwindows just open it up in your editor of choice.

next scroll down to where it says "id:3:initdefault:" and change it to "id:4:initdefault:" or "id:5:initdefault:" depending on your system.. Read the hints in the file it helps..

ok save that.

next (assuming you have gnome) log in as root, and run login screen setup, there should be an option to autologin a user. use it.

last thing the website, open it up in browser and log off with it open in the account you want it to auto open in, when you log off there should be a box asking you if you would like to save current setup, check it.

and that should be all..

Happy tweaking....

hope this helps.
