I need to be able to update my system but only have dialup internet. I have Mandrake 10.1 and get my iso's at work using an usb pen drive(1gig). I would like to use the Mandrake Package Installer but I have no clue how to point it to anything other than the install CD's or the internet sites that I have seen in other posts. Where do I get the updates for my system and how can I install them locally from my hd.

You can get individual rpm packets from any mandrake mirror sight.

http://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/distribut...6/Mandrake/RPMS

for example.

However, how to select which ones to download, that could be trouble some. I supose the best way to do it would be to just go into the package up-dater, see which ones it wants to update, than download them at work and install them yourself. Anybody else have any ideas?

Thanks for the reply. Is there a way to change this code to direct to my hard drive if I download all the progs into four directories?
[CODE]

urpmi.addmedia contrib http://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/distribut...6/media/contrib with synthesis.hdlist.cz

urpmi.addmedia jpackage http://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/distribut.../media/jpackage with synthesis.hdlist.cz

urpmi.addmedia main http://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/distribut...i586/media/main with synthesis.hdlist.cz

urpmi.addmedia update_source http://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/distribut...dates/10.1/RPMS with media_info/synthesis.hdlist.cz

Thanks ......... smile.gif

Try BSD... they come cheaper in stores ($5) compared to Linux. If you really want only Linux, then try downloading something small like basic slackware (only 1 cd) or Suse if you are a beginner (I still don't like suse but it is pretty small)

Yes, you can use direct paths in the addmedia commands ... like this:

CODE
urpmi.removemedia -a

urpmi.addmedia contrib /full/path/to/contrib with synthesis.hdlist.cz
urpmi.addmedia jpackage /full/path/to/jpackage with synthesis.hdlist.cz
urpmi.addmedia main /full/path/to/main with synthesis.hdlist.cz

urpmi.addmedia update_source http://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/distributions/mandrakelinux/official/updates/10.1/RPMS with media_info/synthesis.hdlist.cz

Substitute your path to the 3 directories ... or even the path to an update directory also that has media_info under it and contains the synthesis.hdlist.cz file for the updates.

You would, of course, have to sync your directories with the external directories whenever files change externally ... the only directories that should change externally are updates/10.1/RPMS and contrib.

Thank you. I was hoping that I could mirror the update sites on my hard drive by downloading all the files into local directories on my box. It is about the only option that I have with dial up speeds. Thanks again for the help...... smile.gif
