Full Version: Trouble Installing My Nvidia Driver
Linuxhelp > Support > Technical Support
I cain't get my NVIDIA driver to work. I downloaded it from the NVIDIA site and
ran it in the run command and I get this Error: You appear to be running an X
server; please exit X before installing. For further details, please see the
section INSTALLING THE NVIDIA DRIVER in the README available on the Linux
driver download page at

How do I edit my X-server and what do I need to do? I'm a linux newbie.
I'm running the KDE 3.2 with a GeForceFX5900 video card. Thanks!

1. login as root ( if you are running the X ... and you are smile.gif , press CTRL-ALT-F1) type root and the password end hit ENTER

2. vi /etc/inittab press I change id:5:initdefault: to id:3:initdefault then ESC type :wq and hit ENTER to save und quit

3. type restart ( hope you saved any open doccument in that X session )

4. you'll get to the console upon reboot, type root and password , now cd path_to_nvidia_installer

a )
chmod 755 *.run

b )

** the kernel source must be installed, in case you are using Fedora Core, just type :
uname -r
apt-get update
apt-get install kernel-source

kernel source and kernel must be the EXACT
cd /usr/src
cd linux-(version_here)
vi Makefile (if I remember this right, or maybe MakeFile) and remove the custom word from the kernel version) I to insert / modify with vi ...after done press ESC then type :wq and ENTER

Hope this helps a bit
