can anyone tell me how to get the usb version working as i've been trying for hours and googling to absolutely no avail, almost everything i have read has made absolutely no sense to me.

its a motorolla surfboard 5100 cable modem
Making the USB device work is way to hard ... having a NIC is much easier. If you get the USB working, it creates a virtual network device, which is slower and more resource intensive than a real NIC.

You will also have to deal with driver changes everytime you upgrade the kernel.

Making the NIC work, is in my opinion, the best choice.
