Full Version: X Wont Start - Debian

I have installed Debian GNU/Linux 3.0r2 on my system recently. I am trying various distros and have gotten to all (popular ones anyways) except Debian and Gentoo linux. I went through the install and everything, all fine. First login, setup everything without a problem. Go to login to X for the first time; problem. My screen flickers alot trying to load up GNOME, I try KDE same thing. It tells me the X server wont start, all of this looks oddly firmiliar; my video card is not working with the OS, happened to me before on RH9 (the first distro I tried). So I did the same steps as before, downloaded the driver from the NVIDIA site (.run) file. This time it didnt work though, and I really dont know enough yet how to solve this latest problem (Im tryin'!).

When I run the install it says it has no kernel, so it says it will try to make one, then it says it has no source to make the kernel from. Im really at a loss as to what to do. I have heard good things about Debian and really want to try it out.

Here is my sys specs:
AMD Athlon XP 1700+
Biostar kt333 MB
NVIDIA GeForce 5200 Video Card (128MB)

Im fairly condifent that it is because my video card is not supported, but that not necessarily it. Any help would be much appreciated.

Also note, I do not have a /etc/X11/ directory? Not sure if this is just a Debian thing or what, but Im lost as to how to get X to load. All I can do now is use a command line, which is great for compiling my C++ files for school but, not much for an OS heh.

I am assuming that if you just installed Debian 3.0r2, then you are still using the stock kernel.

First, you need to check as to which kernel you have installed, you can find this out with the following command:

uname -r

For example, on my system, i get this:

eulogy:~# uname -r
2.6.3-1-386

I may be wrong (because i normally would use a custom built kernel on my user system when i need nvidia modules), but you may just need the header files. So, for my kernel, i would issue the following command:

eulogy:~# apt-get install kernel-headers-2.6-386

Then try and install the NVidia drivers.

It's odd that you don't have an /etc/X11 directory. Debian does create this, check to see what Xserver files you have, here is a list of mine:

Note that not all of these are absolutly needed, and don't worry about the version numbers, i'm using the Unstable tree of debian. The easiest way to ensure you have all the nessesary files is with:

apt-get install x-window-system

When asked to choose what driver to install, select "nv" for the nvidia module, if that doesn't work, try vesa.
Tom128
thanks for the reply

I tried doing that and it said it could not get the headers. Im assuming apt-get uses the internet? I think my network card may not be recognized correctly then if so.

I'll keep trying to figure this out, but I may just have to go with a different distro, even though I dont want to until I try this one.
Corey
Well, let's start with the network card first. What network card do you have? If it's a PCI card, you can execute a command find out what PCI devices.

If you would like help with the NIC, execute the following comands and paste your output in a reply:

Command 1:

lspci -v

Command 2:

/sbin/lsmod
