I thought I had successfuly compiled 2.6.8.1 on my machine, however all of the modules in the /lib/modules/2.6.8.1 folder have the extension .ko rather than .o, and the first thing I noticed was that this caused my ethernet connection to cease functioning because it didn't like having the module natsemi.ko. What did I do that is causing this?
Corey
*.ko module files are the norm for 2.6.x kernels. They should function in the same way as *.o modules did for the 2.4.x kernels.

First, ensure that your using the correct kernel first:

uname -r

And then attempt to probe the module:

modprobe -v netsemi

If it does not find the module, then do a search for it:

find /lib/modules/`uname -r`/ | grep netsemi

If this does not return any results, then your module was not compiled during kernel compilation. Double-check your kernel config and re-build the modules.
