Full Version: Gentoo Rebuild...
Linuxhelp > Support > Technical Support
Jim
So I have been having some odd issues with Gentoo lately. My X system seems to have slowed down considerably, it works fine ounce the program is launched, but it takes a wile to launch a program. Every now and than, when I reboot, I try to start the X Server and my monitors just say "Signal out of range" but if i reboot usually everything is fine. And now my "task bar" keeps crashing on me and disapearing. So that stinks.

It was my first successful stage one install so I think it might have been a bit sloppy, so I am thinking about re-building it. Below are my use flags and what not, any suggestions for changes/addition? My system specs are in my signature, and I intend on using KDE, ....

make.conf
CODE
CFLAGS="-O2 -mcpu=athlon-xp -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
MAKEPOTS="-j2"
USE="-gtk -gnome qt kde cdr alsa  avi emacs java quicktime xmms jpeg -msn oscar samba mozilla gtk2 videos oss MMX"
GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://mirrors.tds.net/gentoo http://mirror.datapipe.net/gentoo http://mirrors.tds.net/gentoo"
adam.stokes
Anything in the log files that would show an error?

I would use this as your CFLAGS:

CODE
CFLAGS="-O3 -march=athlon-xp -funroll-loops -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -msse -m3dnow -mfpmath=sse,387"

--------------
Here is my USE= variable (minus MMX2 and sse2)

USE="wxwindows samba mozilla gtk2 cdr dvd alsa bonobo videos oss mysql MMX 3DNow 3DNowExt sse gstreamer fftw flac mad mpeg xmms xv qt kde gnome jpeg quicktime"
--------------

I would not use -gtk and -gnome ... lots of programs (like mozilla, evolution, openoffice) use gtk. I install both kde and gnome for maximum flexability.

All your other settings look good.

My mirrors are:
CODE
GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://open-systems.ufl.edu/mirrors/gentoo http://gentoo.chem.wisc.edu/gentoo/ http://mirror.clarkson.edu/pub/distributions/gentoo/ http://gentoo.seren.com/gentoo http://128.213.5.34/gentoo/"

if you have mirrorselect installed, do this (if not installed, do emerge mirrorselect:

mirrorselect -s5 -a -D
