I am setting up NFS between Trustix 2.0 (kernel 2.4.26) and Linux Mandrake 10 (kernel 2.6.3) and am having intermitent NFS mount problems. Sometimes when I try to mount (either on startup or 'service netfs restart'), I get this:

CODE
Jul 16 14:23:10 nar055 mount: mount: RPC: Timed out

Sometimes it works, sometimes there's one error, here's a few:

CODE
Jul 16 14:25:51 nar055 umount: Bad UMNT RPC: RPC: Timed out
Jul 16 14:25:51 nar055 netfs: Unmounting NFS filesystems:  succeeded
Jul 16 14:26:14 nar055 mount: mount: RPC: Timed out
Jul 16 14:26:56 nar055 last message repeated 2 times
Jul 16 14:27:17 nar055 mount: mount: RPC: Timed out
Jul 16 14:27:17 nar055 netfs: Mounting NFS filesystems:  failed
Jul 16 14:27:18 nar055 netfs: Mounting other filesystems:  succeeded
Jul 16 14:33:01 nar055 mount: mount: RPC: Timed out
Jul 16 14:33:43 nar055 last message repeated 2 times
Jul 16 14:34:04 nar055 mount: mount: RPC: Timed out

These are from the client's logs. I didn't see anyting in the server's logs.

Right now it's mounted, but I need it to be reliable for an office environment. Any suggestions? blink.gif Thank you.

Is it maybe a firewall issue?

Try turning off both iptables and see if it works everytime ... if so we can look at the firewall rules.

hughesjr, thanks for the reply.

On Trustix side I had the iptables rule to accept everything from the Mandrake system based on IP. To take it one step further, I accepted everything INPUT and OUTPUT. No improvement.

On the Mandrake side there is no firewall.

CODE
[root@mandrake ahz]# time service netfs start
Mounting NFS filesystems:  mount: RPC: Timed out

Notice it took a long time (almost 90 seconds) to fail just 3 mounts. When it works, it's really fast.

At the same time I find this in the Trustix (server) log file:
CODE
Jul 20 15:50:14 aslan rpc.mountd: authenticated mount request from 192.168.0.155:919 for /home/shared/foo (/home/shared/foo)

Right now it's not working at all. I tried using 'service netfs restart' several times.
