Full Version: How Do You Get Proftpd Installed On Mandrake 10
Linuxhelp > Support > Technical Support
I'm a complete beginner to Linux so thought I'd pick the easiest one to install in Mandrake. All I really want to do is set up an FTP server with ProFTPd. Can someone tell me whether its installed by default because I cant see it. All I can see when poking around is something called gFTP which cant be the same thing can it? I've run the updates and when I go to the install software all I get is the options for installing anonymous logins for ProFTPd. What I want is the main program but where is it and how do I get it installed?

Appreciate your help

gftp is a graphical FTP client that allows you to connect to FTP servers...not related to proftpd.

You can install proFTPd using the program urpmi, if you have it setup. First set up urpmi to get updates via this thread.

Then install proftpd via the commands:

urpmi.update -a
urpmi proftpd

Then you would edit the file /etc/proftpd.conf to setup the server per the instructions here.

Once everything is setup, you would start the service with the command:

/etc/init.d/proftpd start

After you make changes to the file /etc/proftpd.conf, restart the service for them to take effect:

/etc/init.d/proftpd restart

If everything is like you want it, you can make it restart on every bootup via the commands:

chkconfig --levels 2345 proftpd on
chkconfig --levels 016 proftpd off

(don't do this until you are sure the configuration is what you want).
All commands are to be type into the terminal as the root user.
