Full Version: Does Linux Ever Need To Be Defragged?
Linuxhelp > Support > Technical Support
I move files around alot and I know every few months my XP box needed it, is this something done in linux or not needed?

There are utilities available to do it .... I normally don't use them. (One specifically (defrag) is only for ext2 and it is fairly dangerous).

Linux (etx2, ext3 and reiserfs) is designed to minimize fragmentation ... If you really, absolutely, feel like you must defrag ... just copy the files off the partition and move them back.
