Full Version: Debian X Problem

Malloc42
Hello all,

I've been beating my head against the wall for days trying to figure this out. I have a Debian 'testing' box which I've been trying to get X working correctly on for days now. I had a nasty reinstall several months ago, and afterwards was only apparently able to get X to start with KDE. I tried to change over to gnome and have had a headache ever since.

The best I've worked out so far is this: I can type "gdm" and an X server starts on VT7, I also get a message that gdm has encountered a problem as X seems to already be running on VT7 (it wasn't prior to starting gdm). VT7 shows the grey, cross-hatched, background with the "X" cursor on it telling me X started, and hasn't started it's window manager yet. 'startx' just drops back to the command line, with following logs.

Thanks for your help. Once again, it was working recently. An attempted change to gnome seems to have killed my settup. DRI was working as well. I've now uninstalled and reinstalled everything to the point I should be back to a working system, to no avail.

Gary.

I'm not quite sure what the problem would be, your log file seems to be okay.

Is there anything listed in your ~/.xinitrc file? If not, try adding "startkde" to the file. Kill all of your gdm sessions, and just test it first with startx.
