Full Version: Data Recovery In Hd - Ext3
Linuxhelp > Support > Technical Support
Hi All,

I was using Mandrake Community 10.0 and have two hard disks - hda (boot disk) and hdb (Journalised FS: ext3).

Recently, I installed afresh Mandrake Official 10.0 in hda. After the installation, the data in hdb seems to have disappeared. I am not able to retrieve any data from it. Has anyone encountered this before and is there a way to recover the 'hidden' data? Below is the fstab

/dev/hda1 / ext3 defaults 1 1
/dev/hda6 /home ext3 defaults 1 2
/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0022,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec 0 0
/dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom2 auto umask=0022,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec 0 0
/dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0
dev=/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target1/lun0/part1,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0022,iocharset=iso8859-15,kudzu,codepage=850 0 0

I really appreciate it if you could provide me some guidance on this.

Thanks in advance.
Have you tried to mount a partition on hdb? It is not mounted in the /etc/fstab.

What is the output of :

fdisk -l /dev/hdb
I'm sorry, I am very new to linux.

I have tried:
mount -t ext3 /dev/hdb1 /root/test
cd /root/test
but no files listed there, only a folder named 'lost+found'

I have just tried:
fdisk -l /dev/hdb

These are the results
Disk /dev/hdb: 41.1 GB, 41110142976 bytes
16 heads, 63 sectors/track, 79656 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 1008 * 512 = 516096 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdb1 * 1 79656 40146592+ 83 Linux

Thank you so much.
That is the correct mount command ...

it seems there is nothing in the partition /dev/hdb1

Did you do the command:

cd /root/test
ls -al

See if there is anything in the lost+found directory...

cd /root/test
ls -al

no files found. In lost+found, also no files found.
before (and after) mounting the /dev/hdb1 partition, run the command:

df -h
