***** My linux don't have a Make Command so I downloaded make-3.80. I uncompress it. Then following the INSTALL file. *******

2. Type `make' to compile the package.

If you're building GNU make on a system which does not already have
a `make', you can use the build.sh shell script to compile. Run
`sh ./build.sh'. This should compile the program in the current
directory. Then you will have a Make program that you can use for
`make install', or whatever else.

What distribution are you running? I gaurentee that your distribution comes with a pre-compiled copy of the make utilities, so, it's best to use those rather then trying to compile it from scratch.

I'm using redhat 7.3, I updated my gcc. The reason I didn't install the make utilities is that I'm trying to learn to compile it from scratch. Thanks for your help.

Well, in that case I would suggest that you forego your compiling from scratch for the make utils. You will need these packages in order to install from stuff from scratch.

I'm not totally familier with Redhat, however, I believe there is a program that lets you add/remove programs. Go in there and make sure you have Development Tools installed (more specifically automake autoconf make m4 libtool, etc.). After installing these,y ou can go ahead and compile other things from scratch, but, you need these!

Jemini...if you want to learn how to compile and how linux works...

Let me recommend Linux From Scratch

Select a mirror close to you, and do the stable install ... here is one I would use:

http://lfs.crash404.com/lfs/view/stable/

If you make it to the end, you will know how linux works....this is a great learning tool.

Try this command...

this should work..all of us forgot th biggrin.gif biggrin.gif e fact that make executable will be created in the current directory and thus should be executed from there only.
After "./make install" you should be able to run make without problems.. dry.gif
