Hi,

I think you still remember a bit about my network, that I have three linux bridges that serve to connect a 100mbit network to a 10mbit wireless one (and that they are also Samba servers).

The problem is, which I found out after a linux guru from hungary visited me, that my network is overloaded during working hours , and he told me something about the control signal (or some sorta signal that is supposed to always come back if a connection is succesfull if I understood it right) is getting lost (timed out or something). And he told me in order to fix this I should limit the max bandwidth between these bridges to 95% and leave that 5% to that control signal (? or what it is called).

The first question is : would I solve this problem by simply installing some sorte of bandwidth control tool on the 3 bridges that connect the 3 companies with the 10Mbit wireless connection ?
This control signal problem should NOT be present in my 100Mbit network right ? if there is a possibility is there a way to limit the entire network 100mbit / 10mbit to 95% max usage and leave that 5% to that control signal(?).

Or is it simply enough to do something with the bridges ?
Can you please help me with this? what do I need where to get it? pretty-please

I don't know your entire process ... but, I know that you have a Win2K terminal server.

Would it be possible to do most of the high bandwidth processes from the Win2K Terminal server via a remote desktop connection (seperate for each user) ... and to put the Win2k terminal server and the things it talks to most (file servers, mail servers, ect.) on the fast Lan with it .... all on the same fast switch

Then your remote users will be using the RDC (very low bandwidth) to do all thier stuff ... and the majority of the TCP traffic will be between the Win2k server and the file servers and mail servers on the fast network.

I think he is talking about the connection's aknowlegdement packets ... and that might indeed be a major problem.

I haven't ever used any of these in production ... but CBQ and/or HTB should be able to limit bandwidth.

Hi,

I was talking about limiting bandwidth to 95% on the wireless network , I mean by making sure that the wireless part which is very limited on bandwidth will have 5% of bandwidth available to that control signal stuff.

This is causing me problems not just on the Terminal server but on other networked computers as well.

The 3 bridges are whitebox 3.0 EL computers, and if there is a possibility to use some rpm based software for it , that would be great.

what I want to do is limit the 10Mbit wireless network to 95%, and make that 5% available for that control traffic, and by this I mean that everything is limited, not just the internet.

right ... but if you limit traffic on the outbound interface of each bridge to 95%, that will do what you are trying to accomplish.

CBQ is built into the 2.4 kernel.

I found this thread ... if you read through all of it (all the other replies and followups to this thread as well), it contains many references to tc and cbq for bandwidth throttling....

Hi,

thanx for the links, I've read them, but I have a few problems / questions :

CBQ is only included in my 2.4.21-15EL as module, and I don't have those directories I'm supposed to have under the /etc/sysconfig/
what to do ? do I need to get something with yum install?

and I have a problem that is making things pretty annoying, as you know for the bridges I need that TUN/TAP device support stuff enabled, but whenever I update a kernel via yum it goes back to module, and the stuff won't work... how can I solve this?

And this Outbound 95% stuff , will it be ok if my traffic is quiet large to both directions ? I mean there is hardcore communications going out and comming in . hm?
