Full Version: Mandrake Iso
Linuxhelp > Support > Technical Support

I am new to linux, trying to make the switch from Microsoft. I have downloaded several copies of mandrake which is a rar file. I have extracted the file and burned it to a CD. My computer does not recognize the CD. Should I not be downloading an ISO and not a rar file but I can't find a mandrake ISO anywhere. If I should be using the rar, how do I burn it using NERO.

I hope this makes sense,

Any help out there would be great.

Check to see if the mandrake files you downloaded end with an .iso extension. If they are, these files are cd images. You should not extract them and then burn them on a cd. Use nero and burn the .iso files as cd images. After that, the install cd should be bootable.
You need to download the ISO files from here:

You have to click the I'm already a member of the Club or plan on registering soon, please send me to the download page NOW button.

Now go to the:

Mandrakelinux 10.0 Community ISO images for i586 and higher

Download either from a close mirror the files:

Once the files are downloaded, you would burn them to CD using the burn image feature of nero (the file README in the download directory has more details).

Before you burn the CDs, download the file Mandrakelinux-10.0-Community-Download.md5sums.asc and use this article to check the MD5 sums of the ISO files.

Here are 2 other articles concerning how to burn Linux ISOs. (one and two)
Thanks for the quick reply. However I have tried this website and if you click on any of the mirrors and then save one of the files you will see in the save as box (file type winrar). It is not a iso and their is no iso in the winrar file.

You winrar is assiocated with ISO files and I think you have your windows explorer set to hide known file types ... the files are ISO files.

Open Windows Explorer (not internet explorer) and goto Tools - Options then select the view tab. Go down the list and turn off:

Hide Extensions for know file types

and see if there aren't now .iso on the end of the files.....

You should be able to burn the files as an image in Nero
Thanks to all, it is now working! I uninstalled WINRAR and redownloaded mandrake and it no longer thinks it is a winrar file. It is now an ISO that I have burned succesfully to a CD.

Really weird eh?
