Hi,

So I've downloaded Whitebox linux 3.0 final/fixed [took me 14hrs], and installed it, just to see how it behaves, etc...

the first thing I've noticed is that the kernel is oldar then in Red Hat 9, and there is a -EL at the end, if I'm correct this would meen Enterprise Linux?

So I guess I will need to update the kernel , but which kernel to chose?

If I use iptables, where does it creates it's log files?, so that I can see who tried to access the server? etc...

Sincerely
Robert B

The EL does indeed mean Enterprise Linux ...

You can get the latest info by editing the file /etc/yum.conf and using this file as a replacement:
CODE
[main]
cachedir=/var/cache/yum
debuglevel=2
logfile=/var/log/yum.log
pkgpolicy=newest
distroverpkg=whitebox-release
tolerant=1
exactarch=1

[base]
name=White Box Enterprise Linux $releasever - $basearch - Base
#baseurl=http://whiteboxlinux.org/pub/$releasever/en/os/$basearch
baseurl=http://www.geekstyle.net/white_box/3.0/en/os/i386/
       http://ftp.jach.hawaii.edu/pub/linux/whitebox/3.0/en/os/i386/
       http://ftp.esat.net/mirrors/whiteboxlinux.org/3.0/en/os/i386/
       http://ftp.kspei.com/mirrors/whiteboxlinux.org/whitebox/3.0/en/os/i386/
       ftp://mirror.physics.ncsu.edu/pub/whitebox/3.0/en/os/i386/

[updates-released]
name=White Box Enterprise Linux $releasever - $basearch - Released Updates
#baseurl=http://whiteboxlinux.org/pub/$releasever/en/updates/
baseurl=http://ftp.jach.hawaii.edu/pub/linux/whitebox/3.0/en/updates/
       http://www.geekstyle.net/white_box/3.0/en/updates/
       http://ftp.esat.net/mirrors/whiteboxlinux.org/3.0/en/updates/
       http://ftp.kspei.com/mirrors/whiteboxlinux.org/whitebox/3.0/en/updates/
       ftp://mirror.physics.ncsu.edu/pub/whitebox/3.0/en/updates/

Then issue the command:

yum update

The latest kernel is 2.4.21-9.0.1.EL ... which is the latest from RHEL 3 AS (whenever RHEL AS updates come out, they are rebuilt and issued for WhiteBox Enterprise Linux).

The kernel is not a stock 2.4.21 kernel, it has many features of the 2.6 Kernel built in ... in fact, see this link concerning the 2.6 features compiled into the RHEL kernel. For all practical purposes, this distro is RHEL AS 3.
