Hello,

We are experiencing problems untarring files we had tarred before. The details are follows.

We did our final year Engg project in Bangalore.
After finishing the project we "tar"red the files and wrote it on a CD. When we tried extracting the files here in Cochin, there are errors cropping up.

While trying to extract these files in Windows it shows errors of not being able to recognise file format.

In LINUX it says something bout base-64 headers.

This is the only working copy of the project we have. We have a copy of the same in the company's version control in Bangalore, but that too is in the tarred format. so we dont know if it is going to work.

If anybody has any idea about what could the error possibly be, kindly inform me. It would be a life saver truly.

Is the program both tared and zipped with either bz2 or gz and you are not using the proper switch to untar it ... ie:

[b]tar -xvzf[b] for .tar.gz

or

[b]tar -xvjf[b] for .tar.bz2

(you can still have just .tar as the filename ... I would try both the above commands to see if it untar's the files)

----------------------------------------------------------

Are you trying to untar with an older version of tar to extract the files than the version it was made from?
