Full Version: Which Distro For 1400*1050?
Linuxhelp > Support > Technical Support
Sorry to make a new topic on my first post, but I need some help.
I have a Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop, running Windows 2000, with a default resolution of 1400*1050.
However in the past when I have tried to run a Linux OS I can never find one which will run in this resolution properly. Can anyone recommend a version to me which will work properly?
Thanks in advance,
Its probobly not so much a distro issue as a driver issue. Have you ever made sure that you had the correct drivers installed and not just tried to use the native linux ones?

Which distro are you using right now? Or which one do you want to try?

O, and don't worry about your first post being a new thread, thats what the forum is for, helping out newbies to become full blown linux gurus.
I have Red Hat 8 and Mandrake 9.1

I think I'd prefer to use Mandrake to be honest.

The thing is, whilst being a very experience Windows using, I've never really touched Linux. I was just using the default drivers. Is it possible to download them under a Windows environment, burn a CD, and then use them for the Linux? I'm guessing, after typing this, that it's exactly what I should be doing actually. I'll give that a go and report back, and hopefully then get using and become a Linux guru too biggrin.gif
Do you have the 5150 with the NVIDIA GForce Go 5200 FX or with the ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 graphics chip
The NVIDIA GForce Go 5200 FX smile.gif
Does anyone recommend a specific distro for my set up, or for someone who is comfortable with PCs, but new to Linux?

Mandrake 9.2 should work ....

On the startup, press F1 and do the install like this:

linux acpi=on

Once you get the install done, update your mandrake to the latest kernel (2.4.22-26 right now), make sure to install and update the kernel source package as well.

Then download and install the latest drivers from the nvidia site (here).
