Full Version: Cant Login To Kde With Non-root Users...

grubber
I'm new to Linux and have SuSE 9.0 installed. So far, I love it. But, I have a problem, and I've searched and read everything I can find.

When the system boots, I get a graphical login prompt. Originally, I could log straight into KDE. But now, if I try to log directly into KDE with a non-root user (root works just fine!), the screen blanks and a couple seconds later, I get the login box again. But, if I start up in failsafe (an option in the dropdown menu), I can type 'kde' and KDE starts up just fine. Why can't I start up directly into KDE?

Here's a short dump of what I see when I type KDE:

Login as root (in a console), and issue the KDE command and see if you have the same output.

Also, look at the XFree86 logs:

The commands:

cd /var/log

ls -lt | grep XF

will produce a list of XFree86 logs (from newest to oldest) of X starts, where you can look for errors with:

less filename

(or with a text editor).

There is also a log called /var/log/kdm.log that has info for every time kdm starts (mine doesn't have a way to tell which login you are looking at).
