I run a small Windows NT network with windows 2000, 98, and 3.11 clients. We have been thinking about migrating our domain controllers to Linux, probably Red Hat Advanced server. I was wondering what people think about this and if anyone had ever done such a thing.

Our users will have to keep their Windows computers. But we would like to have them logging into Linux domain controllers where we:

h Control Log on scripts
h User names and permissions
h File service
h And other functions that our Windows NT Domain controller performs.

Has anyone ever done anything like this? Is this even a feasible plan?

Does anyone know of some good documentation that may help me?
I have setup a couple simple networks that way.

Here is a good tutorial by IBM. (requires registration)

Thanks for the reply, I will be looking over these articals you sent.

You said that you have set up some simple networks this way. With your experiance do you think it would be possible to do this on a larger scale?
I haven't done it with more than 6 clients ... but everything worked OK on those simple networks (print and file sharing, internet access via the linux box, etc.).

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work for more complicated setups with more users.
