Are you talking about an FTP client (something you use to download with) or an FTP server (the program you use to run a server on your linux machine so people can download/upload to that machine)?

What chrisw gave you are the best ftp server programs for linux. I would recommend proftpd for that as well.
------------------------------------------------------
I normally use my web browser as my ftp client in linux. Let's say you had an ftp account at the site 123.abc.com, your username is sam and your password is iam. Let's also say that the site 123.abc.com uses a non standard port of 21212 (instead of port 21) as their ftp port.

If you use the below format :

CODE
ftp://username:password@ftp.site.address:port

so in our example, the string would be:

CODE
ftp://sam:iam@123.abc.com:21212

If you want a seperate ftp client than your web browser, there is one called gftp that works fairly well.
