Are you trying to install something that is one the original CDs or a different program from somewhere else?

You can add items from the original cd's by using the Menu (RedHat) - System Settings - Add / Remove Applications.

If you are trying to add a redhat 9 .rpm file the command is (as root):

rpm -Uvh filename.rpm

(where filename.rpm is the actual filename of the .rpm file you are installing)
-----------------------
personally, right after I install RH9 for someone, I install Apt (the file you need is currently apt-0.5.5cnc6-fr1.i386.rpm). Then use this command to install it...

rpm -Uvh apt-0.5.5cnc6-fr1.i386.rpm

Then do:

apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade

Now when you want to install a program, type this:

apt-get install package_name

If you don't know the package_name, type this if you know anything about the package:

apt-cache search name

(ie apt-cache search movie will give you info about packages that have something to do with movies)

There is also a graphical program installer called synaptic ... you can get it by using :

apt-get install synaptic

Then use it by typing synaptic as root.

(Whenever you use apt-get to install a program, type apt-get update first ... or click the update button on synaptic ... to get the latest online info before the install).

Also, you must bethe root user to install packages....
