as topic says, i've got mandrake i586, fresh install, i did 80% of the packages...

and i'm looking to change root password, mostly, because i don't remember setting one.

is there a way for somone to NOT install a password for root?

-if so, what did it set my password as, and how can i recover that information?

you must set a root password .... what you can do now to recover is:

boot with the Mandrake Linux CD 1, press the F1 key at the first screen, then type rescue and press Enter.

After the rescue dialog comes up, select Mount your partitions under /mnt. The press Enter when prompted to go back to the GUI.

Now select Go to console.

When you get to the prompt, issue this command:

chroot /mnt

Now issue the command:

passwd root

Enter your new password for root twice...

now type reboot ... your root password is changed.
