The problems are on the device /dev/hda2 and when i try and run "e2fsck -c /dev/hda2" im promted with warning message about running e2fsck on a mounted file system but i cant umount /dev/hda2 so how can i sort the problems?

try booting up in single mode and it will
dump you to a bash prompt where you
might be able to umount the partition
and run e2fsck on it and what ever else
you need..i had to do the same on
a system i was administering but its been
a while that i dont really remember EXACTLY
what i did...or if you still cant umount
it see if you can force the check
