Could someone explain what is happening? I'm running RH7.7, it works fine on an older SVGA monitor. But now that I've upgraded to a Dell AS400 flat screen monitor, now gnome won't display the monitor gives the following mesage "analog input- cannot display this video mode" What gives, the monitor works fine in text mode but once gnome lauches it goes offline.

Different monitors require different configurations. If you have changed monitors, then you need to re-build your configuration file.

The main thing you should look for is to check the manual for your new monitor and find out the monitor's horizontal sync range and vertical refresh rate, and what resolutions it can support. Then you can edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file and replace your old monitors values with the new ones. Just look for the following section:

QUOTE
Section "Monitor"
    Identifier  "Monitor0"
    HorizSync  31.5 - 79.0    (replace this value)
    VertRefresh 40-150          (replace this value)
EndSection

and this section:

QUOTE
Section "Screen"
    Identifier  "Screen 1"
    Device      "geforce"
    Monitor    "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth 24
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth      24
Modes      "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"    (add any resolutions the new monitor can support)
        ViewPort    0 0
    EndSubsection
EndSection
