I installed Mandrake 9.1 and I don't remember putting in a login or password. . but whenever my machine boots to the opening page, it asks me for one, so I just make mine up. But it won't let me log in.
During the install you should have set a password for the root user and probably created another user account.

If you cant remember them you can reboot linux and at the lilo prompt type:

linux single

to go into single user mode. from there you can reset the passwords and create a regular user account if you haven't already done so.

You should be typing linux single at the LILO boot prompt when you turn on the computer.

It looks like you are able to log in without any problems as the sam user.
