Hi,
I am a newbie and I recently installed Linux Redhat v9 on my Acer Travelmate 520iT Laptop. The Kernel version is 2.4.20-8. Using the Soundcard detection setting, I get: 'The following Audio device was detected
Vendor: Ali Corporation
Model: M5451 PCi AC-Link Controller Audio Device
Module: Trident

When I select the 'play test sound' button i get the error msg: 'The trident driver could not be loaded. This soundcard may not be compatible with redhat linux'.
Also: 'Automatic detection of the soundcard did not work'

How can I resolve this problem?

I thank you in advance, any help would be appreciated.
Corey
I would check Redhat's Hardware Compatibility list to ensure that your sound card is supported. It should list what module is needed as well.

Thanks very much for your reply,

In terms of Module, does that mean for example -Driver location: Red Hat Linux CD?

I checked the hardware compatibility list which reported:

//Component: Controller Card
//Status: Compatible
//Comments: This includes most of the IDE controller chipsets from ALi, which are //integrated into your the south bridge chip on your motherboard. Examples include //M1641, M1631, M1561, M1541, etc.
//Driver Location: Red Hat Linux installation CD

If the M5451 chipset is included then I assume that the installation process (which was done from a Red Hat Linux installation CD) contained an error; or the driver requires some modification?

I have tried to gather some more information with regards to the nature of the problem. This is what the syslog reported:

I also ran 'dmesg' in a terminal and got this:

********************************************************************************

ALi 5451 did not come out of reset.
trident_ac97_init: error resetting 5451.

From this debugger/syslog report can I determine the problem? If so how?
