I just finished installing Red Hat 7.1 on a home PC that is partitioned with Win 98. I was attemting to use Partition Magic to allocate some free space to the Win 98 partition. PM quickly aborted the remaining tasks. I rebooted and Win 98 came up so I checked PM and the changes were not succesfull. I rebooted again and selected Linux. Everything began and then stopped. The problem came when the root file system was being checked.

Checking root filesystem
/ contains a file system with errors, check forced.
/: Inode 2584 has illegal block(s).

/: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY.
(i.e., without -a or -p options)

***An error occurred during the file system check.
***Dropping you to a shell: the system will reboot
***when you leave the shell.
Give root password for maintenance
(or type Control-D for normal startup):

I hit Control-D and rebooted. I came back to this same spot. I entered my root PW and I now have:

(Repair filesystem) 1#

Can anyone help a newbie? I hope I gave enough info.

If all that is wrong is a couple inode problems then the command:

fsck

might be able to resolve the problem.

If you removed a linux partition it may be hard to fix.

I would start by running fsck and see what happens.....
